Friends of Scott Foundation’s 11th Annual “Unforgettable Prom” Treats Teens With Cancer To A Prom-Filled Celebration

The Friends of Scott Foundation is a local non-profit organization that was founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo, who lost his life to childhood cancer more than 11 years ago. The Friends of Scott Foundation's mission is to help children with cancer and their families by providing the emotional and financial support needed to cope with the disease. This organization is run entirely by volunteers who donate their extra time and dedication toward helping children & young adults with cancer.

Their biggest event of the year is not a fundraiser but instead a carefree evening of dancing and revelry specifically for the children and young adults they serve. The Unforgettable Prom is the Friends of Scott's signature program, and for more than a decade the organization has provided local teens with cancer, many who may not have had the opportunity to attend their own school dances, with their own special prom event.

“Many children are not able to attend their own school proms because of their exhausting chemotherapy treatments. We are proud to be the only nonprofit organization in San Diego to host an annual prom for children battling cancer,” said Carmen Delgadillo, founder and President of the Friends of Scott Foundation.

On March 31, 2017, the Friends of Scott Foundation will host its 11th Annual “Unforgettable Prom” at the San Diego Natural History Museum. This is the first year the Prom will take place at theNAT, and 200 teens with cancer and their guests are expected to attend. It's difficult to adequately describe the Unforgettable Prom and do it justice; it may not seem like a big thing - a night to dance with your friends, binge on junk food, get your picture taken, have your parents witness your expression of joy. For a lot of kids and young adults, this is 'normal'. But for someone who is undergoing cancer treatment the Unforgettable Prom is a night that you're off dietary restriction, that you put on a dress or tux and feel special, that - after months of worry and tears - your parents witness your expression of joy. It's also something for these individuals to look forward to. There's no price tag you can put on that.

The 2017 Unforgettable Prom theme is Dream Big and promises an interactive evening, with décor, food and performers that will bring “The Circus” to Prom.  The evening will begin with a fleet of limousines to pick up the teens and escort them to the event, followed by a red carpet entrance leading to dancing, food and prom-filled fun. To cap off the event a Prom King and Queen are crowned on stage in front of their peers. The Unforgettable Prom experience also includes free dresses, tuxedos and corsages for attending teens.

For the 11th consecutive year, the event’s title sponsor is the Brees Dream Foundation, established by NFL quarterback Drew Brees and Brittany Brees. Jared Aarons, Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster and KGTV Channel 10 Reporter, will host the evening of festivities. This year’s sponsors include Batta Fulkerson Law Group, Gaslamp District Media, Walmart, and Emerald City Limousine.

Other local services and merchants who donate their time and support to make this evening possible include Attention GettersPrincess Project, Friar Tux Shop, Xtreme Fun, La Mesa Florist, and Lounge Appeal. Food vendors will include Wild Tyme Catering, Continental Catering, DiMille’s Pizza, Busalacchi Family Restaurants, Solare’s, Luna Grill, Los Primos, Buckboard Catering and crowd favorites JustLovely Creations and Sensational Treats. Regala Studios, Tony Amat Photography and Fiona Buckley will capture the evening’s excitement. In addition to the unbelievable food and decor, the prom attendees can take home a memento from Little Scene Flipbooks, play Pop Noggins, have their likeness sketched by caricature artists from Launch Art, play Foosball courtesy of Party Pals, and dance all night long to sounds by Benji from CEG Interactive. Attendees will be dazzled by live circus performers, and illusionist Chris Dare will bring a touch of magic to the event. This is not your average Prom experience!

“The Friends of Scott Unforgettable Prom is a magical night filled with glamour, fun and enchantment.  Our patients eagerly anticipate the dress and tuxedo selection, limos and red carpet all leading up to what many patients have described as the best night in their life. For one night children are able to forget their cancer, hospitalization and treatments and are instead able to create cherished memories that will last a lifetime," Amy Schneider RN, Rady Children’s Hospital.
