GDM We Rise Spotlight On Friends Of Scott

The Friends of Scott Foundation is a local non-profit organization that was founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo, who lost his life to childhood cancer more than 10 years ago. The Friends of Scott Foundation's mission is to help children with cancer and their families by providing the emotional and financial support needed to cope with the disease.

This organization is run entirely by volunteers who donate their extra time and dedication toward helping children & young adults with cancer. We have had the opportunity to get to know some of the Friends of Scott volunteers, and were able to sit down with Social Media Coordinator, Pericles Vargas to get some personal information on Scott and the organization.

“Scott had been an active young boy and was an avid fan of Notre Dame sports. He hoped to one day attend school there. During his treatment he was granted a trip by "Make a Wish" and had the fortune of speaking in front of thousands of Notre Dame students at their pep rally before their football game against Perdue and Drew Brees. After Scott lost his battle to leukemia in January of 2001, a few of his closest friends decided to start a foundation in honor of Scott and so Friends of Scott was founded in July 2001. With the help of volunteers FOS started by cooking and offering meals to families at the Ronald McDonald house at Rady Children's Hospital. Our programs grew to offer aid to families, a scholarship, special trips and our signature 'Unforgettable Prom', which was funded by Drew Bree's himself who learned about our organization via the local news and who years later learned about Scott's courageous speech at Notre Dame. We just celebrated our 10th annual prom and continue to offer various programs to help children and families affected by cancer”.

Scott's mother, Carmen Delgadillo, is the president of the non-profit, and every year she and the Friends of Scott volunteers help about 150 San Diego children who have received a cancer diagnosis. We were fortunate to meet Carmen and other FOS volunteers at the 10th Annual Unforgettable Prom. The event truly was an unforgettable experience. Those attending the prom were dressed to the nines and got to walk the red carpet and have their pictures taken prior to the event. At the San Diego Hall of Champions the kids danced and laughed and celebrated all night long.

On Monday, June 6, Gaslamp District MediaParty Naked and Parq are joining forces to raise funds for this deserving organization by putting together a Casino Night charity event. Parq Nightclub will be transformed into a casino for the night, donned with blackjack & poker tables, coveted raffle items and a grand prize for the winner of the Poker Tournament, sponsored by Dark Woods Dream Festival. Attendees have the opportunity to purchase 3 different levels of entry into the casino night as well as entry into the poker tournament. Additionally, Campari is sponsoring the Casino Night and as part of their annual Negroni Week, $1 from each Negroni cocktail sold will be donated to Friends of Scott. The funds raised from the purchase of poker chips, registration and Negroni cocktails will go to the Friends of Scott scholarship program. Each year this program donates money to cancer patients or to survivors to assist with the costs of higher education.

We invite you to join us this Monday in giving back to an organization that has brought hope and support to hundreds of children, young adults and families affected by cancer. Many of us have been touched by cancer in some way, and it can be scary and isolating. Which is why organizations like Friends of Scott are so important to the community. More than just the monetary support they provide, Friends of Scott offers a safe haven and the recognition that you’re not alone, we’re all in this together.
